4 MEDITERRANEAN DIETS TO HELP YOU LOSE WEIGHT

  • by

As someone who has struggled with weight for as long as I can remember, I was motivated to try the Mediterranean diet after watching a documentary when I was in Australia about how it helped people lose weight. The film chronicled the lives of several people who followed the Mediterranean diet and lost significant amounts of weight or kept their weight off permanently.
I thought that if this particular way of eating could help healthy and fit people achieve such great results, then it was worth a shot. So far, I have not only lost 45 pounds on the Mediterranean diet, but I’ve also learned some valuable lessons about food and nutrition that I want to share with you in this post.

BENEFITS OF THE MEDITERRANEAN DIET

  • The Mediterranean diet is a great way to healthily maintain your weight and improve your overall well-being.
  • It’s also good for lowering the risk of heart disease, diabetes, and some types of cancer.
  • There are many benefits to following the Mediterranean diet, but it can be hard to stick to when you’re not in that specific region. Luckily there are plenty of recipes available online that will help make this lifestyle easier for you!

LIST OF MEDITERRANEAN DIETS TO HELP YOU LOSE WEIGHT

The Mediterranean diet is characterized by high consumption of vegetables, fruit, and nuts. Humans lacking these nutrients are at risk for chronic diseases such as obesity, heart disease, and cancer.
In addition to good health benefits, following the Mediterranean diet has financial perks: eating healthy saves consumers money on grocery bills.

HEALTHY FATS

The Mediterranean Diet is one of the healthiest ways to eat because it focuses on healthy fats and proteins. One of the main sources of unhealthy fat in the American diet is processed foods, which are full of sugar and chemicals. But olive oil is a natural source of healthy fat, so you should try to include more olive oil in your diet.

HERBS AND SPICES

There’s something about the smell and taste of herbs and spices that can take over even the best food. Add them to a dish at just the right time, or simply toss some chopped fresh ingredients into your cooking pot, and suddenly you have aroma and flavor in spades.
Herbs add both colors (think: basil) and flavor (think: oregano), while spices offer heat, sweetness, bitterness, umami—a savory taste associated with chicken broth or cheese—and more.
So whether you’re whipping up a basic roast or throwing together an aromatic salad for dinner guests, adding natural seasonings is essential for creating delicious Mediterranean-style dishes without resorting to high-fat dairy products or processed foods.

TRADITIONAL GREEK SALAD

Traditional Greek salads, like the one pictured above, are a summer favorite. They’re light and refreshing, perfect for hot weather meals.
The list of ingredients is simple: sliced cucumbers, tomatoes, shredded cabbage or lettuce mix, onion slices or diced red pepper flakes (or both), olive oil or lemon juice, and feta cheese. But there are lots of variations possible – depending on your preferences and what’s available at the grocery store that day.
Since most versions include olives as part of the mixture, it’s important to get good-quality ones if you want to make this recipe successfully.

I’ve skipped olives in my version for simplicity’s sake – but feel free to experiment with adding them back in! Guava might also be a great addition; it has sweet/tart flavors that would compliment the other veggies nicely.

FISH

When we think of seafood, what comes to mind? Chances are good it’s something delicate and light like a piece of sushi or an avocado toast wrap. But that’s only part of the story. In fact, fish can be one of the healthiest foods you eat—and an especially great option for those looking to slim down or maintain their weight.
Some key reasons why: Fish is loaded with omega-3 fatty acids, which have been linked with reducing heart disease risk factors such as cholesterol levels and blood pressure, promoting brain function, and preventing depression; they also contain protein and other essential nutrients (selenium is chief among them), all of which help keep you feeling energized throughout the day
